Bird Dogs and Pheasant Taxidermy
I took the photo above during my new shorthair pup’s first day in the Pheasants Forever office. While she spent the majority of the day focused on a fresh rawhide and catching some Z’s in her plush kennel, by afternoon she fixated on a pair of mounted pheasants I’ve got hanging in the corner of my office.
Although in a perfect world my new pup would have locked up steady pointing these roosters, she did exhibit strong “prey drive” as she barked while jumping up and down at the stuffed lower rooster. My older shorthair has also shown a strong desire to “retrieve” the same taxidermy.
I’ve gotta believe there are some funny stories out there. How does your bird dog act when encountering taxidermy?

My mounts are high in the wall as well – a table mount I have sits atop the gun cabinet well out of reach. Nonetheless I think the real risk is tha same as anything else around the house subject to chewing and general destruction. When I bring a mount home I let the guys sniff the mount – once they realize its not a live bird ready to flush they generally go about thier business. Training birds in the garage however, that’s another story …
Great picture Bob.
Hey, I see your pup is out of Steve’s new dog Fletch. Did you ever get a chance to see Fletch work and if you did how would you describe him?
Everything I keep hearing is BIG NOSE and lots of power….
@Tom,
I haven’t ever seen Fletcher work. I’ve heard lots of good things though.
Fingers crossed Izzy has that same big nose.
Ollie, my pointer, pays zero attention to mounted birds, or even dead birds I bring around when he wasn’t on the hunt. He did seem a little interested in the turkey I shot this spring, but not a lot. Live birds he goes crazy for, absolutely crazy. I guess he knows by smell if alive or dead, not sure.
