    First dogs always set the bar high. I concur, the worst thing about the dogs that you loving spending the day with is the short life, they work so hard and get so much joy from it. Enjoy them!

    I always thought one of the worst things was the fact that we get to have so few of them. If you get one dog every ten years from 20 to 60(your prime hunting years), you only get to have four dogs. Sure, some folks have several but for most guys, one at a time is all you get. I echo Brian’s sentiment…. Enjoy them!

    We have 2 German Shorthair Pointers … 5 years old and full sisters. My husband will be in deep dispair and so will I when something happens. They love to quail hunt and they are also our little girls at home..

    Our first GSP, Jager von Landschied, lived to 15 3/4 years. He was a great hunter. Tipper von Starkenburg, our second, lived to 12 1/2 years, but died of cancer. He was the best bird and water dog we have ever seen. If it flew, he found it. Sierra, our one girl, got mast cell tumors at the age of 7 1/2, and we lost her. JD, Kentucky Koolaide, is now 8 1/2 and doing well. Our newest, at 9 months, goes to training in March. Here’s hoping he lives a long time.

    Ive got 4 springers. They are 8, 6 and the two babies are 4 years old. The last 2 I had lived to be 14+ years old. Maybe it’s because they don’t kill themselves hunting. I just take them and let them run and play ofn the beach. I was thinking the other day how bad it was going to be since I had 4 of them that would be leaving me

    I have to agree that they dont live long enough, but one thing I have learned from each dog that has passed….is that each one is special in their own right, and can NEVER be replaced! Each one has taught me something different or brought something diverse into my life. I have had the joy of having several dogs live well into their teens and have suffered, most recently, the loss of a 9 month old setter pup…it never gets easier. Enjoy them while you have them.

    No our fur babies don’t stay with us near long enough! Each and everyone of them are special in their own ways. Higgins was an awesome dog and luckily has many children to carry on his legacy!

    I agree with Jennifer, I have one of Higgins’ children(Brody), and he has spent the last 5+ years “training” me to love bird hunting more than any other outdoor activity there is. It was fate that brought him to me as a birthday present, and now it’s the memories in the field(alot of which are still to come) that solidify the “legacy” of a natural.

    Higgins was the grandsire to my 18 month old pup, Riley, and I had a very heavy heart yesterday after reading of Higgins’ death. There are so many wonderful quotations about dogs but I really like this one by an unknown author. “It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are.”

    I recently lost my first shorthair (the week before christmas) Bailey was everything a hunting dog should be. She never showed any signs of cancer I hunted her hard every weekend right up until I took her in for simply showing signs of not looking right. the vet told me she was had cancer in her liver, kidney, and speen. the tumors in her spleen had ruptured and she was bleeding to death.

    My GSP Zeus is four years old…bought him with my own money, took him to college with me when just him and I lived together in a SMALL house…trained him myself…and he has turned into something only a bird hunter will understand. There is something about a dog that no matter how bad your day was, or whatever you did during the day, they are always excited to see you come home. Every once in a while I think about how I will handle that day that I know I can’t control…and to be honest I am not sure how I will react. I try not to think about it and just stay focused on next year’s season.
