Here’s an opportunity to get ‘em outdoors!

Youth hunts start with learning how to shoot and imagining that clay target is a rooster!

It doesn’t seem possible that summer is almost over and kids are starting back to school in the next week or so.  Where did summer go?  I didn’t do nearly all the things I wanted to!  Thank goodness planning for fall outdoor activities is also a lot of fun.  I know I’m looking forward to a Boundary Waters trip in northern Minnesota in early September.  I hope to do some fishing and see lots of wildlife while paddling that amazing wilderness area.

As you think about fall, check out the September and October youth hunting events that are happening in your area.  PF chapters around the country sponsor a host of events in the fall.  Minnesota is advertising  “Hunt ‘Em Up” opportunities.  PF chapters in about 35 locations around the state will be offering youth/women pheasant hunts on Saturday, October 23.  But you have to apply by Wednesday, September 8, so time is short!  What a great way to get out with a kid (who has had firearms safety training).  A parent must accompany the youth (age 12-17), but there will also be a mentor assigned to each child and a chance to hunt on private land or a hunting preserve.  Most events also include a meal and educational instruction on firearms, pheasant habits, gun handling and practice shooting and even how to ask a landowner for permission to hunt.  If you are from Minnesota, this is a great opportunity.  For more information, go to www.mndnr.gov/discover.  For other states, check out the website for your natural resource agency or find a PF chapter at www.pheasantsforever.org

Half of the fun is planning the adventure – so enjoy.  I’d love to hear what you come up with too.
