What are you doing outdoors this summer?

Last weekend I was camping with our National Youth Leadership Council kids (ages 12-17) in southern Illinois in the hottest, most humid weather I’ve experienced in a long time.  It was pretty hard to fall asleep at night in the tent.  I’ll forget that soon enough, but what I won’t forget

Just staying wet is a good way to enjoy being outdoors on hot summer days.

from this summer trip is the Chuck-Will’s-Widow that called above my head most of the night, canoeing with the kids, hanging out in the water to stay cool, cooking in Dutch ovens and eating really great food and sitting around the campfire at night.  I came home appreciating even more my comfortable bed and air conditioning, which is part of why I like to camp.  Summer is such a special time to get outdoors and just play.  I feel sorry for those who stay cooped up in air conditioning all summer and miss the fun because they don’t want to be physically uncomfortable.  What gets you outside this summer?  How are you keeping cool if it’s hot?  Any tips for those who might stay inside to avoid the heat or the bugs?  Sure hope you have a great and safe 4th of July!
