Searching for the Best Bird Dog Registered Names
For about a week, I’ve been staring, blankly mostly, at a form from the American Kennel Club trying to think of a registered name for “Sprig” (call name), my new English cocker spaniel. And I can’t decide whether to be straightforward, creative or funny with it.
Registering your bird dog with the American Kennel Club, or other registry like the Field Dog Stud Book, helps maintain breed integrity and allows dog enthusiasts to track popularity trends. But honestly, the best part is coming up with a unique name to give to your new hunting buddy.
Or so I thought. The process to come up with a single call name was vexing enough, so this is giving me fits.
In the comments area below, tell me your dog’s registered name and the story behind it. I promise I won’t steal it, but I can’t promise I won’t use you as inspiration!

Princess Mazi Mae
Her mothers name was Dutchess something or another so we wanted to keep that a part of her name then we were looking for something unique and were making fun of the car brand Mazda and it just came to us to call her Mazi. It’s neat having a name you don’t see or hear anywhere else
My Shorthair’s registered name is D & D’s Caligan Hunter. We call him Hunter. The name is based on mine and my wife’s first names of David and Denise. Caligan comes from us living in California but I bought my dog from a breeder in Michigan due to his bloodline. So I wanted the (2) state’s names combined. And of course Hunter is the reason I purchased him. He is my 3rd Shorthair and has been the best so far.
I have 15 English Springer Spaniels (all field cut of course and I field trial) and they all have names giving credit to the breeder they originated from.
Example: Doorcreek Chance’s Mighty Me call name: Mighty
breeder: Chuck Nelson (Doorcreek)
Example: Harvest Hunters Little Intellectual call name: Logic
breeder: Katie Gorecki (me) Harvest Hunters
I do like to give credit to not only the breeders and their lines but also I like to give credit to the mommas as well…..
Example: Harvest Hunter SoBe’s Micro Me call name: Micro
Momma: SoBe
Just some guide lines I like to follow
Thought I would share
Hope it helps
My GSP is named Datsa Latsa Liver Action. Mom’s name had Datsa In it, my GSP is liver colored, she is very active like most GSP’s and a take on guns and lever action modified to liver instead! Her call name is Shiloh after Shiloh Sharps. We name all our GSPs after guns. Last one was Remingting and Remi for short.
my brittany’s name is qhk’s krimpet’s chaos of canterbury, aka shrimpee krimpee, we got his name first by breeder, then the tastycake, his behavior, as he is nutso, and street. My llewelin setter is sugar slush hunter goccia, aka babygirl.. for her sweetness, the way she drinks water, and her undying love of the hunt!
DeCoverly’s Borland Baron, call name: “Baron”
DeCoverly = form the kennel
Borland = Scotish for the Boardland that surrounded and supported the castle, My grandmother’s maiden name was Borland, there is a Borland Castle in southern Scotland where my ancesters came from near where English Setters were developed and hunted.
Baron = the was and Baron is the master of the Borland which he guards and hunts. Baron has other Regal names in his pedigree, one of his litter mates is “Prince”
So the name supports the kennel, his pedigree, his breed and my heritage.
My 2 previous Llewellyn English Setters were from Charlen’s kennels in Monroe, Michigan near the Enrico Fermi Nuclear Plant Hence the names:
1. D.J.’s Nuclear Pabst, call name: “Nuke”. DJ for me, Pabst for the large black mark near hsi tail.
2. D.J.’s Nuclear Inferno, call name “Blaze”. DJ for me, Blaze for the narrow white blaze down his forehead between his semetrical black eye masks.
Both were FDSB registered.
Baron our current dog is both AKC and FDSB registered.
I found “Lucky” a Belgian Shepard mix tied to my lifeguard chair at a state park beach when I was in my late teens. This was and still is a dumping ground for unwanted pets. I named her Lucky because she was, and I was, after I found her. As a probable mutt with no pedigree history she was never registerd and never had a formal name. She was a fantastic dog for 15 years.
Sky Hunter Legacy’s Foxy Roxy….. Legacy is her mother Laci’s reg name.
Roxy is her call name…we are invited to the NAVHDA Invitational this fall…she is a VERY talented GSP!
I just got my newest gun dog in June. He is a GWP. I had a hard time coming up with a good name as well. So I went with the straight foreword approach. His name is Benlee’s Gunner Von Jägers Houdini. Benlee’s is the kennel name. He is a gun dog so there’s gunner . His fathers name is Hunter and in German it’s jäger. The Houdini is do to the fact he can get out of any kennel you put him in.
Our black lab is from Sauk River Kennels; his registered name is “Sauk River’s Lethal Weapon” we call him Riggs… be careful what you call your dog, I think they become their name!
Our Llewellin Setter’s registered name is “Hanks’s Buckshot Bondhu”. We call him “Buck”. He is a great-grandson to “Hank”, who was featured on the TV show “Hunting with Hank”. “Bondhu” is in respect of the Bondhu bloodline.
My wife and I took a 9 hour drive to Arkansas the day after Christmas in 2005 to pick up our 6 week old bird dog puppy.
As well as being a part of our family, he is a great hunting partner.
My English cocker’s name is Sleepy Eye Red, Hot and Blue! TD RA. She is a blue roan and tan girl. Her call name is Libby, short for Liberty as in red, white and blue. Her register name includes the exclamation point, which I think is unusual. She loves tracking, agility and rally. We haven’t tried bird work yet, but she is very birdy.
I decided to name my dog after one of the greatest horrible movies of all time, Roadhouse. I named my black lab Dalton after Patrick Swayze’s character. His official AKC name is; “And I thought you’d be bigger Dalton” a popular line in the movie. His personality matches the name, easy going and friendly until it’s time to get down to business!
Everedi’s Blazin’ Inferno – call name “Rooster Cogburn”. He comes from Everedi’s Blazing Star (great Missouri forb) and his mom was Everedi’s Smoke Jumper or something like that. I wanted a “fire” name so went with Blazin’ Inferno – would have done prescribed fire, but it sounded cheesy. Husband’s dog is Tughill Plateau (Tug) – from an area in NY and the new pup is Genessee Twelve Horse (Ginny) which is a local NY beer.
My wife and I are Penn State fans, so we named our dogs with that in mind.
Tanner’s Nittany Pride (Nittany) and Tanner’s Nittany Linebacker Blitz (Blitz). I like to call them rescue dogs since we got them from Notre Dame fans. Just kidding (kind of).
Thunderstruck Pheasants Forever Sprig. Maybe Mittens should be included too…just saying

Thanks all for the name sharing, so many good ones! – Anthony Hauck, PF Online Editor
@Tim – with this crowd, the pheasant and quail hunt is the only way to go! – Anthony Hauck, PF Online Editor
Apache’s Dakota Fast Horse. As you know, we call her Dakota for short. Long story about the rest, but it’s a good one. Some day we’ll meet up for a beer and I’ll tell it to you!
@D.J. – Awesome name, great to hear from you. “Sprig” is going in for a 2-week bird/gun introduction course starting this weekend, more on that later. How’s “Dakota” coming along?
Ours is a black lab named Augustus Miles Rambo of Kimber Creek Kennels (call name Gus). It was a name to allow all the kids favorites (Miles and Rambo) with a good field name AuGUStus. Best dog ever- first dog, and we’ve just added a yellow lab to our family, named Miley (note the similarity to Miles above…) Not sure of how we are going to get around to her AKC name yet!
Grand Theft Auto “Felony” – after the videogame – after all the great outdoors is the original playstation right?
Dirty Martini “Olive” my favorite drink
Can’t Hurry Love “Dash” he came from a litter where the word love was supposed to be in all the AKC names.
